Do It Yourself

Preparation

Before you begin, prepare a layout plan for your Stack Stone project. Be sure to consider existing landcape, soil conditions and local building codes. Before you begin excavation you should contact local utility companies to locate any buried cables.

You will require the following equipment for your Stack Stone project:

  • Stack Stone
  • Standar carpenter's level
  • Shovel
  • String line
  • Tape measure
  • Hand tamper
  • Landscaping fabric

Step 1:

Base preparation will depend on the size and type of wall you have planned. If the project involves more than three courses, the base course of Stack Stone will need to be buried below grade. Dig a trench of the requird depth and 11" in width. Compact the base and use a standard carpenters's level to ensure that teh top of your base is level throughout.

Step 2:

Position Stack Stone units side by side and level with a carpenter's level in both directions. Use a string line to verify that the wall is straight. A landscaping fabric placed behind the Stack Stone units will prevent infiltration of soil particles.

Curved Walls:

Curved walls can be achieved by using wedged units. Adjust the base row of Stack Stone to produce the desired radius.

Step 3:

Once the base course is installed and level, the rest is easy. Simply lay the next row of Stack Stone units on top of the previous row, pulling each unit forward until secure. You must stagger joints from layer to layer and will need to cut units periodically in order to maintain a staggered appearance.

Creating a 90º corner

To creat a 90º corner, knock off the back lip of one unit and split the unit in half. Place the partial unit perpendicular to the last unit laid then continue building as normal.
