Traditional Fireplaces

The traditional fireplace has been around for 100's of years and changed little. This type of fireplace is the usual masonry with or without hearths or mantels found in many homes throughout America. This model is losing popularity because they are very inefficient. Almost all the heat generated from the wood goes straight up through the chimney and doesn't warm the home. Most people who install traditional fireplaces today do not intend to use them to heat their homes but just want the added atmosphere.

Pros

  • Fuel is typically inexpensive. Especially if you can acquire it for free.
  • Provides a great atmosphere. Everyone enjoys sitting around a crackling fire.

Cons

  • Acquiring fuel can be a lot of work and a dirty job if done yourself.
  • Potential for insects in wood pile.
  • Wood takes up a lot of space and must be kept dry.
  • Non-efficient traditional wood fireplaces run approximately 15% efficiency.
